14 Days of Autism Love Giveaway
Ahhhhhh, love is in the air! Can you feel it?

My heart’s beating a little faster because we’re celebrating our love for those on the autism spectrum. Every day, for the next 14 days, I’m going to feature one of our favorite authors, apps, and organizations as a countdown to a huge giveaway of their products. (Now I can feel your heart beating faster too!) Have fun learning about them …and don’t forget to enter the giveaway. (Entry form at the end of this post. Lots of ways to earn extra entries too.)

Day 10: Unintentional Humor

My journey as an autism warrior has not been easy, but I am proud of the positive impact we are making in the world.  Our hilarious book, Unintentional Humor; Celebrating the Literal Mind® teaches about the literal mind which is common for many people with autism.  Our true stories and original cartoons provide insight into the communication challenges and “Unintentional Humor” of autism.

Over the 2 years we have taken our message on the road. Brent, Jessie (our yellow lab) and I have visited 21 states and traveled over 20,000 miles in the Celebrate Autism van and RV.  Brent’s sister Jenny was with us for half of the journey!

My Motivation

After Brent graduated from high school, I realized that I needed to create opportunities for Brent.  I decided to use two of my strongest assets, my business skills and my sense of humor.  Together we collaborated on a book about the humorous stories that follow a literal interpretation of language (very common for people with autism).  Our book, Unintentional Humor; Celebrating the Literal Mind® was published in 2012.

After our book was released, Brent began to recognize that people enjoyed meeting him and asking him questions about living with autism. He became more comfortable sharing his story with others and today he experiences success and personal joy as an inspirational speaker.  I never imagined such a wonderful outcome from our humorous book!

Autism has made my life everything that it is today and I wouldn’t change it, even if I could.

About Jodi Murphy

I am the founder of Geek Club Books, autism storytelling through mobile apps for awareness, acceptance and understanding. My mission is to use the art of storytelling and technology to entertain and educate for the social good. I am a 'positive' autism advocate, mother of an awesome adult on the autism spectrum, lifestyle journalist, and marketing specialist.

  1. I met my good friend Linda Gund Anderson through “the Love of Autism”!

  2. As the mother of twins on the spectrum, we understand the literal mind! My husband and I are often amused by the comments made by our boys and their sense of humor is growing, but still pull us aside and asks us to explain jokes or why everyone is laughing. I am going to look your book up and get one, I am sure we will appreciate it!!!

    • Linda Gund Anderson and her son Brent are just awesome. The book is wonderful and whimsical and it’s amazing how many idioms and sayings that we have that are truly confusing if you think of them from a literal mind perspective!
