How Did the Autism Society Conference Inspire Me?

There have been 46 previous Autism Society conferences but number 47 in New Orleans was my first. What a gathering! The hallways were filled with people—professionals, families, autistic individuals—who were ready to learn and network. I enjoyed the exchange of ideas and being able to meet so many amazing people face-to-face. I learned what many autistic individuals are accomplishing and felt inspired. I listened to the ways families are creating their own opportunities for their children and felt inspired. I discovered professionals, … [Read more...]

Who’ll Be at the Autism Society Convention?

By Jonathan Murphy (As told to Jodi Murphy for the upcoming Autism Society Convention) When you encounter me today, the man you see before you is a galaxy’s distance away from the boy I used to be. I was the kid in the corner pacing back and forth, the boy who wanted to go unnoticed and left to live inside my own mind’s palace. I wouldn’t look you in the eye. I just didn’t have the confidence to peer into your soul. The eyes are piercing gateways and it was just too difficult for me to ‘see’ you. So I’d have to look to your left or right in … [Read more...]

Over the previous months, we had watched his development regress. He had stopped speaking, started grunting and spun in circles without ever losing his balance. We were newcomers to the church and the community. When the first few notes of Amazing Grace began, … [Read more...]
