Our Nonprofit’s Origin Story Begins with a Boy in a Cape

It began with a boy in a cape. He looks like any other boy but his brain is wired differently. So the kids at school and the people in his community treated him differently, and not in a good way. They were “aware” of autism, but they didn’t understand it. “Better to ignore him,” they thought. “Or make fun of him.” And the boy hid behind his cape and said, “I guess I just don’t matter.” This was my son’s story but sadly it’s a universal experience when you are on the autism spectrum. Marginalized, stigmatized, bullied and isolated, so many … [Read more...]

The Galactic Power of a Horrible Hug!

How can you help your child overcome the fear of the unknown? This was the question I asked myself when Jonathan was going to start his next school year at a brand new school. Why did we change schools? Well, his first school just wasn’t a good fit for him academically or socially. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was on the autism spectrum and the school just wasn’t geared for those who learned differently. And the students weren’t very accepting of kids who were different. So we found a wonderful school our unique boy—a safe haven … [Read more...]

Onward Geek Club Books – The Next Steps

What began as a creative project inspired by my son, has turned into a movement for change and empowerment. For almost two years I've been working on Geek Club Books. What started as a creative brainstorm, has turned into a 501c3 charity on a mission to profoundly change how the world views autism. We use app technology to engage and tell real stories from our own family's experiences to entertain children while educating them about autism. Research shows that narrative has a powerful impact on the brain, so our autism stories elicit … [Read more...]

Early Mighty League Reviews Are In!

I know, I know. It's a cheesy reference...a parody of something actress, Sally Fields, said at the 1985 Academy Awards when she accepted her second Oscar for "Places in the Heart." At that moment, she felt validated and accepted as a serious actress from her peers and the Academy. And it's the best way for me to express how we're feeling from the early reviews for The Mighty League. Our app has only been out on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play since September 2nd, and already we've heard such positive feedback from parents and industry-respected … [Read more...]
