Geek Club Books, 501c3 charity, has a creative approach to their autism acceptance and education mission. One mom, Jodi Murphy, and her two adult children, Jonathan and Molly−one on the autism spectrum−are autism storytellers for positive change. They’re using app technology to engage and creative storytelling to teach children about autism and to help those who are autistic feel valued and welcome. Parents, kids, educators and app reviewers say their work encourages acceptance and understanding. Jonathan, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome, received a Temple Grandin award for his contribution on their first app.
Their next project is the “Mighty League Vol. 2: The Horrible Hug” story app. The main character (boy or girl because reader gets to choose gender) embarks on a journey to an alien planet…a brand new school…an overwhelming, fear-of-the-unknown experience for any child…amplified when you are on the autism spectrum. But the captain of the U.S.S. Mighty League soon discovers that these alien’s “horrible hugs” are welcoming and a sign of acceptance. And it’s inspired by Jonathan’s real experiences going from a school where he was bullied and stigmatized to a school where the teachers transformed his life.
They are looking for support from the community to raise the $10,000 they need to cover the cost of illustrations, animations, audio and app development. They’ve got some cool perks for contributors including their apps, Mighty League comic book, CDs, limited edition prints, drawing you into the app, or Jonathan will come to you to perform his children’s story time show.
A contribution will help them build their library of ‘autistic main character’ story apps, curriculum and expand their autistic writers and Mighty League Kids empowerment programs. With the community behind them, they can profoundly change how the world views autism…one story at a time.
