In second grade, Mrs. G took away Jonathan’s piece of string for playing with it during class. When he came home from school he had this to say about the incident:
If she keeps taking things away from the children, there will be nothing left. She might even take away our skin, leaving us with bones…nothing but bones like the dinosaurs.
His ways of thinking and expressing himself have always fascinated me! Knowing what he’s hyper focused on…back then it was tyrannosaurus rex…always gives me clues into the emotions he’s trying to express. I could understand and empathize with his frustration over his teacher taking away his string. What she didn’t know (and I only came to know later) was that string probably helped him focus and shut out the cacophony of noises his sensitive ears picked up even in a “quiet” classroom.
